HIPAA-CompliantHealthcareAppDevelopment
A custom healthcare app we built end to end: telemedicine video, FHIR/HL7 EHR integration, and patient portals, with the security baked in rather than bolted on. Here is how we approached the build.
Project overview
We built a custom healthcare app for a clinical team that needed patient data to move between systems instead of sitting trapped in one. The build pairs FHIR/HL7 EHR integration with telemedicine video and a patient portal, so someone can book a virtual consultation and join the call from their phone without setting foot in a waiting room. Security wasn't a feature we added at the end. It shaped the architecture from the first commit.

The problems a healthcare app has to fix
Patient data stuck in silos
A patient's history sits locked in one EHR that can't talk to the next. That gap is annoying in retail software. In healthcare it's a clinician making a call without the full picture.
Telemedicine that fights the patient
Clunky interfaces and a video call that only works on desktop quietly push people back toward the waiting room. The whole point of virtual care is that it works on the phone in someone's hand.
Staff drowning in manual work
Intake forms, scheduling, claims. Hours a day go to repetitive admin that a workflow could handle, and every one of those hours is time not spent with a patient.
Security and audit trails at scale
Keeping a HIPAA-aware audit trail honest gets harder, not easier, as the system grows. Bolt it on late and you're rebuilding the foundation under a live product.
How we built the healthcare app
FHIR/HL7 EHR integration
We connect to the EHR systems already in place over FHIR and HL7, the standards built for exactly this, so patient records read and write cleanly instead of through a fragile custom bridge.
Role-based access and audit trails
Every role sees only what its permissions allow, and the system writes a complete audit log of who touched which record and when. That paper trail is what a security review actually asks for.
Accessible UI, big tap targets
The interface meets WCAG 2.2 AA. Large tap targets, clear contrast, and a layout that works for an older patient and a busy clinician without making either fight the screen.
Automated intake, scheduling, claims
The repetitive admin runs itself. Intake, appointment scheduling, and claims move through workflows we built, which hands staff back the hours they used to lose to forms.
